However, for most taxpayers, the path from your paycheck to your final tax bill follows a very consistent equation:

Understanding your taxes is easier when seen as a three-step subtraction problem. The Tax Equation:

Step A. Gross Income - (Deductions/Adjustments OR itemization) = Taxable Income

Approximately 90% of taxpayers claim the standard deduction. You should only itemize if your expenses such as mortgage interest, charitable contributions or significant medical expenses - add up to more than the standard deduction amount.

Understanding the Progressive Tax System

A common myth is that you pay one flat percentage on your entire income. In reality, we use a Progressive Tax System. This means different “chunks” of your income are taxed at different rates as you move up or down the brackets.

Visualizing these brackets can make the system much clearer. Whether you are filing as a single individual or married filing jointly, the strategy remains the same. Find your taxable income first , then apply the progressive rates.

Daily joys: Buy a gift card to a local coffee shop with enough balance for 5 or 10 morning coffees. It’s a small ritual the person can enjoy again and again, and one day the’ll likely talk about with others.

Wellness & Fitness: Cover a friend’s gym membership subscription for one to three months. Buy a ten-class pass for Pilates, Yoga or Salsa dancing for someone who loves those activities.

Meaningful Contributions: Make a donation to a charity in the recipient’s name to a cause they care about like children’s hospital, animal shelters, outdoor volunteer organizations, or free educational platforms or offer to match you loved one’s charitable donation, perhaps doubling their contribution to a certain limit.

Education & Growth: Pay for a student’s college course or a valuable online learning program.

Future Planning: Contribute to someone’s investment account or retirement account - Traditional, Roth IRA, or savings fund to a big future purchase like a home or new bike or car.

The power of Practicality

To illustrate this idea, I’ll share a personal example. I love backpacking and rock climbing, and some of the most memorable gifts I’ve ever received were a USB-C rechargeable headlamp and a rock climbing pack. I still use them years later. Those gifts didn’t just sit on a shelf, the became part of my life.

Give with purpose

The holiday season shouldn’t be about an object destined for the trash bin. The process of giving a present should be as memorable and meaningful as the gift itself.

This and every holiday, give gifts with a purpose and choose something that will have a lasting, positive effect on the person receiving it.

Consider a family dinner, a birthday party, or a night out with friends. Look around - what do you see? More often than not, people are staring at their phones instead of each other. This simple observation is one of the clearest signs of how personal electronic devices distract us from the people sitting right in front of us.

My Turning Point

I used to be one of those people. At gatherings, I’d sit with my head down, scrolling aimlessly and Googling irrelevant information. Meanwhile, the friend I hadn’t seen in months was sitting right beside me, waiting for a real conversation.

That realization hit hard. I enjoy human interactions and the joy of genuine connection. But those things don’t just happen by chance—they require effort, intention, and presence.

Choosing Presence

Now, by applying small but powerful methods, I’ve been able to curb my phone use and reclaim the quality of the time I spend with others. When I’m at a café, in the park, at a party, or dancing at a social gathering, I no longer feel the urge to escape into my phone. Instead, I choose to be present.

And the difference is life-changing. I feel less distracted, more connected, and more fulfilled.

If you’ve noticed your phone pulling you away from the people and experiences that matter most, take a step back. Ask yourself: What can I do to be more intentional? Maybe it’s leaving your phone in your bag during dinner, switching to a paper notebook for ideas, or wearing a watch instead of relying on your screen where you might find notifications that will keep you scrolling.

Whatever method you choose, remember this: presence is powerful. When you free yourself from constant distractions, you don’t just gain time—you gain deeper connections, stronger relationships, and moments that truly matter.

But can we blame these politicians?

History provides clear and convincing evidence that undocumented immigrants will be nothing more than a pawn to be played with for as long as there’s interest and demand from citizens of the rest of the world to want to move here. Let’s go back in time to the year 2005 when the George Bush administration, republicans, and a handful of democrats expressed interest in wanting to resolve the issue of immigration and then history will point to democrats as the party that killed the bill. Let’s revisit the Obama administration and you will find it easy to remember that democrats gained a majority in both chambers of congress, and needed only to work with three republicans towards an immigration bill that Obama would have signed. But instead, after the voters disapproved of his first half administration and republicans gained control of congress, Democrats threw some middle-of-the-night proposals that everyone knew were doomed from the start. Then, we lived through the Trump and Biden administration and we know what happened. The lives of immigrants are a joke to these politicians. Every immigrant must accept the reality that will, prayer, and hope are not going to change their undocumented status.
